What do I need to know about fundraising?
Fundraising is about building and maintaining relationships. It is about individuals having a connection to a cause. Giving by individuals makes up the vast majority of contributions received by nonprofit organizations. Individuals account for approximately 80 percent of all contributions received.
Fundraising is about asking those who understand and believe in Columbus State and are willing to invest in our shared future.
Step 1: Starting the Conversation
It’s the conversation, not the event. Whether it is a letter, an email, or a phone call- the first step to a relationship is starting the conversation.
How do I write a good fundraising letter? When should I send it? Where does the money go? All of those questions and more are answered in the following links:
- Letters and email marketing
- Creating a database
- Foundation's policies for processing gifts and setting up a fund
Step 2: Building the Relationship- to Event or Not to Event
It takes years to build relationships and it is an ongoing process. Determining whether you are ready to have an event depends on three things:
- Do you have a reason to hold an event (launching a new space, a new program, honoring a prominent alumni or a prominent speaker)?
- Do you have enough people to invite?
- Do you have a budget?
Once you decide you are ready to have an engagement or fundraising event, the following links will help you get started.
